DRC congratulates its client Knobbe Martens on Friday’s jury verdict over Apple in a long-running patent dispute concerning the Apple watch. After a one-week trial, in which Apple demanded a jury, the eight-person panel deliberated for just a few hours on Friday before rejecting all of Apple’s patent infringement claims against Masimo’s current product line and invalidating a longstanding Apple patent. The case was tried in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware before the Honorable Jennifer Hall.

The Knobbe trial team was headed by lead trial counsel Brian Horne and the trial attorneys included Kendall Loebbaka, Benjamin Katzenellenbogen, and Jeremy Anapol. The Knobbe team also included Joseph Re, Stephen Jensen, Stephen Larson, Nicholas Zovko, Jonathan Bachand, Ted Cannon, Adam Powell, Sean Murray, Raymond Lu, and Rhett Ramsey. Knobbe was assisted by local counsel John C. Phillips Jr. and Megan C. Haney of Phillips McLaughlin & Hall PA.

In addition to rejecting most of Apple’s claims and invalidating one of Apple’s patents, the jury found against Masimo on two old products that Masimo had discontinued, including an outdated charging cable, rendering Apple’s victory on these counts mostly symbolic and without any practical consequence to Masimo. The jury awarded Apple, with a market capitalization of around $3.5 trillion, a grand total of $250.

DRC assisted the trial team with jury research, demonstrative aids, jury selection, and trial strategy consulting.
