DRC congratulates its clients Ronald Kuby and Emma Vasta-Kuby and the entire trial team at The Law Office of Ronald Kuby on the acquittal of Gary Lawrence by a Nassau County jury on charges of second-degree murder and first-degree attempted robbery, following just 90 minutes of deliberation on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. The verdict comes after Mr. Lawrence was retried for the 1990 murder of Hofstra University assistant football coach Harry Joseph Healy.
Mr. Lawrence’s 1992 conviction was overturned in 2023 after it was revealed that prosecutors had withheld significant evidence from the defense, in violation of their obligations under Brady v. Maryland. Among the suppressed materials were notes and polygraph results from investigations into at least 11 alternative leads that police had pursued but never disclosed to Mr. Lawrence. The original conviction also relied heavily on a confession obtained after Mr. Lawrence was interrogated for approximately 19 hours without food, drink, or sleep, and on questionable eyewitness testimony. Notably, the confession was inconsistent with the facts of the murder.
The Nassau County District Attorney’s office chose to retry Mr. Lawrence, resulting in the trial that concluded this week in a full acquittal.
Standing outside the Nassau County Court in Mineola, Ron Kuby said, “In 42 years [of practicing law], I’ve never had a jury come back this quickly."
DRC’s Kristin Veltry and Claudia Varner assisted the trial team with jury selection.
